Every December we get into the same cycle: figuring out what presents to buy. For some of us, it is a day job! But it’s all for a good cause: happiness under the Christmas tree.
The million-dollar question: what should you buy? What should you ask? Not only for yourself but also for your little ones. You don’t need any more knick knacks and certainly don’t want cheaply made plastic toys in the house. For that reason, we listed our favorite sustainable gifts for kids of all ages.
Gift ideas for the baby
Babies have no awareness of gifts yet, so there’s no need for a huge pile of presents. What do brand new parents like? Practical presents! Useful stuff! Things that make their lives easier! Like gorgeous organic cotton baby outfits, a cute booklet to ‘read’ with the baby or a nice natural bath oil for the cold winter days.
Gift ideas for the infant
In this age group unpacking is actually more fun than the present itself. The more to unpack, the better! If you do not want a house full of presents from the one-dollar shop, just wrap the different parts of one gift separately. A lot to unwrap means a lot of fun!
Our tips? Grimm toys, Plan Toys and Green Toys. A whole collection of these toys can be found at Musjes and Hip & Groen. Also have a look at your national version of Craigslist, we bet you’ll find these beautiful sustainable toys there as well.
Gift ideas for the toddler
Toddlers still like unwrapping presents, but they are also more aware of the present itself. Great ideas are (wooden) puzzles or the backpacks of Affenzahn. They’re made from recycled PET bottles and come in great shapes and sizes. And what about crayons? These crayons are just slightly larger than pencils making them easier to hold. Let your toddler discover his inner artist!
And let’s not forget the grandparents. A beautiful framed drawing of your offspring or a family photo on an Ixxi ensures a lasting memory.
There’s an awful lot of fun stuff. Is it important to you to celebrate the holidays in an environmentally friendly way? Then choose something that lasts, something natural, something homemade or something you can pass on to another happy user. It will make you AND our mother earth happy.
Just be conscious of the time you have together. Time flies. And have fun!
Happy holidays!
