Skin oil or a cream?

Skin can sometimes feel dry and even start to itch as a result. How annoying is that. And how do you explain to your little one that they mustn’t scratch? So, off we go: time to moisturise! But that’s easier said than done, because what should you actually apply to get the skin soft and supple again? There’s plenty of choice, but how do you make the right one? We’re happy to explain the differences. But what actually is dry skin, and how does it happen?[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

What is dry skin?

With dry skin, the moisture balance is off: there’s too little moisture in the skin. The skin first ensures that the skin cells at the bottom layer retain moisture. The closer you get to the skin’s surface, the less moisture reaches there. In other words: the moisture balance needs to be restored.

See also our blog on ‘what exactly are eczema and dry skin’

What causes dry skin?
Dry skin can have several causes, such as changes in temperature, low humidity and not drinking enough water.

Do you need to moisturise dry skin?
You don’t have to moisturise dry skin. In principle, the skin can resolve the imbalance on its own, but this can take a few days. By applying an oil or cream, you support the skin in its recovery. It also immediately reduces the tight, itchy feeling.

What is a skin oil?

A skin oil is a plant-based oil without added water. Be careful when buying a skin oil, as oils from regular brands quite often contain paraffinum liquidum. In that case, it’s not a plant-based oil. We generally advise against using this type of oil, as it doesn’t support the skin’s recovery. It only provides temporary relief.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”16362″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What is the property of a skin oil?

The property of an oil is that it’s fatty. Although even among oils there are different degrees of fattiness. Sunflower oil, for example, feels less greasy on the skin than almond oil. This has to do with the size of the molecule. As a result, how long it takes for the oil to be absorbed by the skin depends on the type of oil.

Berivita has put together a handy overview of the different oils and what they’re best used for.

What is the difference between massage oil and skin oil?

For a massage oil, it’s important that the oil stays on the skin for a while so that the hands can glide easily over the skin. As a result, massage oil generally absorbs more slowly than skin oil. But to be honest, I personally use the Petit&Jolie Massage Oil as a skin oil too.

What is a body lotion or skin cream?

A cream is a mixture of water and oil (fat-containing ingredients). As a result, a cream has a fuller emulsion than an oil.

What is the property of a cream?

A cream is absorbed by the skin fairly quickly (depending on the ratio of water to oil). Generally speaking, the more water it contains, the faster the cream is absorbed by the skin.

What’s best to use for dry skin?

For extremely dry skin, we recommend a skin oil, as it’s richer than a cream. Over time, as the dryness of the skin decreases, you can switch to a cream, such as Petit&Jolie nourishing cream.

A cream is used for daily skin maintenance. Of course, there are differences between oils and creams. For instance, Petit&Jolie anti stretch Mark oil has been developed to absorb quickly. That’s a big difference compared to the massage oil. This oil, as the name suggests, has really been developed for massage.

If you have any questions after reading this blog, please contact us.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Dry skin.
